What to Wear in Marrakech – Ultimate Packing Guide

Venturing into the Moroccan desert was my first foray into a Muslim country that follows Islamic laws and customs. This means being conscientious of my outfit choices to be respectful of the local culture. The best approach for women seems to be keeping our chest, shoulders, elbows, and knees covered as much as possible. It is also recommended to avoid tight and form-fitting clothing in public as well.
But as I look over my mostly tight-fitting/low-cut hot girl wardrobe – I realized this would be a serious challenge for me. I wanted to share my experience and create a packing guide for those who may be in the same boat.
Where I got my conservative fits
Let me just be upfront with you guys. I am an Amazon addict. The variety of options, the convenience factor, the quick shipping, the easy returns… Amazon just does everything I need it to do for a quick and easy online shopping experience. This made it my go-to for this packing guide and stocking my Marrakesh wardrobe.
There are some honorable mentions for items I grabbed from Zara and Lulu’s as well. I went for desert-vibe pieces that were stylish, lightweight, flowy, and fun! Think nomad couture. Just kidding because I am by no means a fashion expert. I just like to look and feel cute. See below for some items I have personally picked up.
Here’s my general advice when picking pieces to wear. Disclaimer: these tips apply for items to wear out and about in public. There seems to be more leniency in hotels and resorts where wearing shorter dresses, tank tops, and shorts can be okay. I’ll report back on the accuracy of this upon my return!
What to Wear in Marrakech – Tops/Blouses:
Opt for loose-fitting T-shirts, tunics, and blouses made of linen, cotton, or other lightweight materials. I plan on bringing some fitted t-shirts to wear as undershirts for my dresses and to pair with large cover-ups and kimonos.
What to Wear in Marrakech – Bottoms:
Wide-legged palazzos, maxi and midi skirts, and capris are all great options. Just be sure to pick something that is at least knee-length or longer. Leggings and jeans can also work well in cooler weather and at night with long tunics and kaftans. Not every piece should be floor-length though! You don’t want them dragging on the ground in the Medina or desert. You may just see me wearing these exact pants if you keep scrolling!
What to Wear in Marrakech – Dresses:
Long maxi and midi dresses are an easy, breezy, beautiful (see what I did there?) solution to look stylish and be comfortable out in the desert sun during the day. I loved this dress so much that I got it in a few colors to wear throughout my trip. It was so light and incredibly comfortable in the desert heat. The colors also really pop!
What to Wear in Marrakech – Jackets/Cover-Ups:
Be sure to bring lightweight kimonos, linen scarves, cover-ups, and potentially rain jackets (depending on the time of year you go). This is a great way to stay modest and add a little something extra to your look. I loved being able to just throw something over my shoulders when I was out and about in the medina. Believe it or not, it helps with the heat too!

What to Wear in Marrakech – Headwear:
A sun hat will definitely be necessary! I also recommend large lightweight linen scarves since they can be used to cover your hair (if necessary) or as a shawl to cover up your shoulders should you opt for a strapless dress.
What to Wear in Marrakech – Footwear:
Bring comfortable walking shoes! There is a lot of walking in the Medina and you want to be comfortable. I have been on the hunt for the perfect travel sneaker and ordered a pair of Suavs for my trip so check out my review on them to learn more!
Comfortable sneakers or sandals will definitely be your best bet for walking the alleyways of the medina.
What to Wear in Marrakech – Accessories:
Have fun with these! Colorful scarves, large sunglasses, and beaded or tassel statement jewelry. I like to have fun with my accessories and was totally able to do so in Morocco!
